I live in a world where secrecy reigns.
A Society rooted in power, wealth, and long-held dynasties.
Where men are Kings, and women are pawns.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve dreamt of escaping the shackles of my expectations.
But it can only ever be a dream.
I made a fatal mistake, and those shackles became a cage.
Now I’m trapped in a war with a man who controls my every move.
He’s my brother’s best friend.
My enemy, my tormentor, and my solace.
His words have the power to wound me.
His touch just might break me.
But this is his kingdom, and as long as I’m here I only have one choice.
I’ll play by his rules.
Series: The Rite Trilogy #1
My Rating: ★★★★
I have to say, it would be in your best interest to read The Society Trilogy before you read this. While it focuses on a different couple, Judge and Mercedes’ story starts there and there are some cross overs between the books that may spoil it if you haven’t read it. Also, it just feels better if you have the backdrop from The Society Trilogy.
The rules are very simple, Mercedes. Good behavior earns you privileges. Bad behavior earns you consequences.
I’ve been gagging for this book since The Society trilogy. Their chemistry was fire even then when the book wasn’t really about them. I’m not going to go into details about the plot because honestly, I think you’re better off just diving in headfirst.
I’m here for Judge. He is dark, mysterious, a bit pycho in that alphahole way we all love to hate. He’s the ultimate tortured hero with serious mummy issues. The saying “heavy is the head that wear the crown” is very much something he knows from experience. Despite all the perks of the Montgomery name, there’s no doubt it has cost him a lot too. The last thing he needs is to be in the wrong end of the Society rules, and walk in Mercedes, that’s exactly where he finds himself. What to do, what to do?
Mercedes is my type of girl. She’s feisty, sassy, self-assured and stubborn as hell and not the type of woman any man can tame. You have to bring it to bring her to heel. Why wouldn’t she be? She’s of good stock after all. But one night turns her life upside down. Feeling resentful of her brother, scared for her life and worried about what her “disciple” entails, the last thing she expected was to start having thoughts and entanglements with her brother’s best friend and the last place she really wants to be yet again is a pawn in pursuit of someone’s revenge plans. Alas, there is again.
I loved the unexpected but nonetheless hot chemistry between them. Generally, this is like a slow burn that sets out the foundation for the story. Don’t get me wrong, there was plenty of drama, but when I tell you that my anticipation for book two is sky high, I’m not kidding.
I would have liked to see a bit more of their lives outside the house though. Maybe a bit more noise from Georgie and a bit more of Judge’s life that didn’t involve the Rite. Nonetheless I enjoyed it thoroughly and I can’t wait for the next instalment because that cliffhanger
