I can’t be with you anymore.

She tore out my heart with those words six years ago, as I lay recovering in a hospital bed. But her leaving cut deeper than any wound I bore on my flesh.

Now she’s back, desperate to make amends. I swore I’d never forgive her, but one look and I’m back to a place where she loved me.

One kiss—her hands on my body, my name on her lips—makes me wonder . . . is there hope among the ruins of us?

I didn’t want to leave him.
But I had to.

Back then, staying seemed impossible. I was held captive by my own fear. It wouldn’t allow me to see that loving him was all I needed.

I’m not the same scared girl I was then. I’m ready to surrender to everything I feel.

But there’s something he doesn’t know—the real reason why I left.

And once he finds out, the second chance I’ve dreamed of might be nothing but a fantasy.

Series: Fragile Hearts #4

My Rating: ★★★⋆

If you’ve read the first three books in this series, then you had to have been dying with anticipation of Gabe’s story.

When Gabe and Mia met as teenagers, their love was so strong and everyone around them knew with certainty that they were meant to be together. After a rough childhood full of uncertainty and eventual heartbreak following the death of her father, Mia was weary when Gabe chose the same profession.  When Gabe gets hurt at work, Mia decides she cannot live with the uncertainty anymore and decide to walk away. Her walking away though is not without secrets.

Gabe is left with so many questions. He is hurt; physically and emotionally, in love but angry; so angry that when Mia tries to get in touch with him, he doesn’t want to know. He decides to cut his loses and try to move on. While his mind recognises this as a good idea, his heart seems to disagree. The heart wants what it wants, and his heart wants Mia. But he’ll be dammed if the heart gets what it wants. So imagine his surprise when one day he raises his eye from his laptop only to come face to face with Mia standing in his office.

I really enjoyed this story. If you’re a fan of second chance romances, especially when the grovelling is done by the woman, this story full of anger, anguish, fear, resentment, love and forgiveness is for you. While I must admit, my normal poison of choice is the darker, keep-you-up-at-night kind of romance, I found there was enough angst, turmoil, and heartache to keep you glued to the pages.
