Our greatest risk was the one we never took …

It was an accidental spring fling three years ago—one week spent in the mountains of Big Sur and no one was the wiser. Ignore the fact that Tobias James was my neighbor and my best friend’s older brother. Or that upon our return his hoop dreams were waiting for him, robbing us of any potential future we could have shared.

Now, I’m fulfilling my own dreams in L.A. and my biggest dream of all is about to come true. The last thing I expected was for my past and my present to collide.

Not now. Not here. Not him.

But he struts back into my life like he never even left. Unfortunately, I’ll never forget what happened after he did.

The ball is in my court, but Tobias isn’t below stealing—my power, my resolve, my heart… When he wants a second chance to reignite our connection, my answer is simple. We can’t.

Not unless we defy the rules our dreams were built on and risk everything.

BOOK REVIEW: Defying Gravity

My Rating:

“What happens when two people ignore all the rules and all the obstacles the world throws at them and finally end up together?”

A second chance romance set in the treacherous life of the NBA and brought to life by KK Allen was everything I needed in a swoony, heart-string tugging romance; suspense and all consuming. I found myself enthralled by the story from page one. Although second chance romances rarely get my heart going, there is no denying that Ms Allen’s writing is lyrical. The smooth flow of words and the story they tell defied any trop preferences I had when reading this book.

“You’re my moon, you know. The light in my dark. I’ll never stop reaching for you, Amelia.”

Playing basketball with the woman he loves by his side was all Tobias James has ever wanted. With the world constantly battering him with secret after secret, he finds Amelia to be the only thing holding him still.  Life happens and in a drastic twist of events, he finds himself in Chicago to play ball while the woman he loves is on the other side of the country. But this doesn’t matter to him, the plan is still the same; play ball and do whatever he has to do to get back to her. However, when things don’t go well for Amelia, she makes a decision that tilts Toby’s world absolutely. And after 3 years of losing his mind wondering about her, his ball dreams have come true, now all that remains is to find Amelia.

“A dream should never cost someone their soul.”

Amelia Clark’s plans are simple; dance in the NBA and be with the man she loves. She works her ass off to prepare herself for a career in the NBA. When her work finally pays off, the last thing she expected was for her dream to be the thing that sucks the life out of her. Emotionally and physically abused, Amelia decides she can’t take anymore. She’s lost much of herself in pursuit of her dreams; she doesn’t recognise who she is anymore. Sure, she can walk away. But Toby and a career in the NBA have always been synonymous. How does she walk away from one without walking away from the other?

“We’re just Amelia and Tobias. We’re moon and earth, living amongst stars and sun. We’re everything. And no matter the distance, we still make sense together.”

While distance and time have done nothing to quench the inferno of her attraction, they can’t seem to get their timing right. Now that their careers have been set up and dreams have been realised, they both realise that the all-consuming love they have for one another is not going anywhere anytime soon.  But with a threat to their love looming and threatening everything they’re trying to build, Toby and Amelia find themselves having to make some difficult decisions.

“I’d much rather with you in secret, than without you in a lie.”

The story is written in first POV from both Amelia and Toby’s narrative. We got to see Amelia display impressive levels of strength for such a young girl. The way she steadied Tobias in rough times was very mature of her. The strength she had to possess to walk away from all the things that were hurting her, considering the amount of work she’s put into it, was second to none. Although I do wish she could have handled the Toby situation better while he was in Chicago, but I get why she did it the way she did.

I must admit though, after a while it started to seem like all Toby and Amelia were doing was taking turns in destroying each other with why they couldn’t be together. Every time you think, “okay you’ve got it together; now work out a way to stay together”, one of them walks away.

K.K. Allen delivered a very relatable, realistic and deeply romantic story with a lot of suspense that portrayed Amelia and Toby’s struggles to balance their careers, looking out for one another, and nurture their feelings for each other in a tear-jerking and satisfying way.

“I believe they call that defying gravity.”
