They groomed me for Midnight Mayhem. Like a trained possession, weak against their control.

But thereโs something uglier that has been haunting me for years upon years. So ugly that I have never seen itโs face. I never had to. Iโd hear his whispers through my internal screams, feel his shadow brush against my nightmares. He was my the monster that tormented me.

When I started Midnight Mayhem, his presence faded.
His whispers were silenced.
His shadow dissolving without a trace.
I wondered why that was.

Series: Midnight Mayhem #1
My Rating: โฅโฅโฅโฅ.5
โThis is neither a circus nor a carnival. This is what happens when the clock strikes twelve and all of the monsters you thought never existed expose themselves.โ
Child, when I tell you this book is the shit, I mean itโs the shit. Iโve been threating to read it since its release last year and I kept put it off for some reason. But book 2 is coming soon so I figured I need to get my shit together and read it. This is my first rodeo with this author and hot damnโฆIโll tell you right now, Iโm contemplating all my lifeโs decisions that delayed this discovery.
The story is just soโฆI donโt even know the words to use. CRAZY is up there, but somehow feels inadequate, I spent the first 50% of the book thinking
One minute Iโm thinking okay, the heroin (Dove) is going to meet a nice guy whoโs going to save her from her misfortunes blah blah blah. Then
,
She flips the script on me. Then I think okay, sheโs going to be sold into the sex slavery and human trafficking shit. I stay with this narrative for a while until she meets Delila and then it turns out nopeโฆ thatโs not it. Anyway, I digress. As I was saying, the first 50% I spent with my โwhat the fuckโ face on, the second half was a complete and utter mindfuck. I swear I spent most of it confused and intrigued as a motherfucker.
โYou see, when I was a little girl, a shadow chased me. An entity. Instead of stepping out from behind it to feel the sun against my skin, this shadow ruined every expectation I had of seeing the light.โ
Our homegirl dove has been through some hardships in her young life. Tragedy has befallen her at 14 years old with the loss of her โparentsโ and after being passed from pillar to post that is foster homes, she finally finds some normalcy and security in a strip club where she dances for a living. Dance is all sheโs ever loved and all sheโs ever needed to survive- the loss of her parents and the shadow that continues to haunt her day and night.
But sheโs not sure whether this shadow is real or merely a figment of her imagination. Until she finds herself kidnapped and thrown into the throng that is the Midnight Mayhem. Not sure what to call it-but imagine if what normal people would call a carnival and a circus had sex and had a baby.
Yes, I know what youโre thinkingโฆ
But its true people. Thrown into the den of The Kiznitch Brothers, one particular lion, King, makes her heart jump with familiarity she canโt explain.
Lets pause here for a moment. Up until this point Iโm convinced this is some sex traffic shit. Dove is a little weak for my liking and seems to have no backbone to stand up for herself. She chooses not to speak and defend herself in anyway. At this point were just past the 60% and finally, some light starts to shed, and I have a few aha moment. But this nugget of information, leaves some inconsistency in the character. For most of the book, as I said she a mute by choice, keeps to herself and all that and then next she has verbal diarrhoea to a total stranger. I mean whatโs that about? I get it she could finally be growing up, but damn, there could atleast have been a bit of a struggle in her character going so out of character.
Anyway, in the second half, the story is so good Iโm not even bothered by that shit. Bombs start dropping and revelations that once again leave me like
King was your perfect alpha hole. Domineering, rude, dark, broody and it turns out with good reason. Making him so utterly, deliciously perfect. The rest of his brothers and other supporting characters were great too.
There were some like Jack that I thought could have done with some more work. I think the scene where Dove was kidnapped by Jack up until the rescue could have done with more work. Iโm not sure what the deal is with Kyrin. Of all the brothers heโs the one whoโs story was least developed. Hopefully Iโll get to know him better in future books.ย But its all good. Do yourself a favour and read his book.
